John Maxwell sums up his definition of leadership as "leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less." This moves beyond the position defining the leader, to looking at the ability of the leader to influence others - both those who would consider themselves followers, and those outside that circle. Indirectly, it also builds in leadership character, since without maintaining integrity and trustworthiness, the capability to influence will disappear.

The Youth Leadership Academy will serve to identify potential leadership among the teens in each division, and will seek to train them in the skills necessary to become the local officers and leaders of tomorrow.

Curriculum and resources have been chosen to provide the best opportunity for learning and developing the necessary educational, cultural and social skills to ensure success for the teens chosen for the Academy. The resources will include specialized Bible studies, Salvation Army history, and electives such as mission and purpose, understanding your identity, developing convictions and courage, how to present yourself, critical thinking, career options, self esteem, peer pressure, Christian sexual education, image, internet usage, drugs/alcohol, etiquette, financial planning, resume writing, job interviews, dressing appropriately, Christian service, Officership, relationships, colleges, racial reconciliation, current events, etc.  These select young people will be guided monthly by the Corps Officer and the DYS or selected divisional representative.

The largest component of the Academy will be My Dreams, My Realities. Working with Pike’s Peak Learning Company, the teens will focus on personal development, finances, college and career. It will provide the threshold for how they see the possibilities in their lives, and will open the door to leadership in other areas

"The function of education is to
teach one to think intensively and
to think critically

is the true goal
of education."
